Arthur Edit

Arthur Machen was a very influential Welshwriter of the 1890's and early 20th century, best known for his supernatural and horror fiction. His stories inspired many other great horror writers such as H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. The novella The Great God Pan is considered is most solid work by many [1].

Especially H.P. Lovecraft was a devoted fan of Machen. In his essay Supernatural Horror in Literature he named Machen one of the four master of modern horror alongside Algernon Blackwood, Lord Dunsany, and M. R. James. Furthermore lovecraft often paid tributes to Machen, by incorporating Machen's stories and characters in his own stories. The Dunwich horror, for instance, has many similarities to The Great God Pan. The Whisperer in the Darkness is turn comparable with The Novel of the Black Seal [2].

The Reunion and The Whisperer in the Darkness Edit

In both stories the protagonist goes to an isolated location after receiving a letter from a friend. In Chapter 7 of the Last Door, Wakefield investigates Élis Mór in order to find clues about The Veil. This chapter has some striking similarities to the novels written by Machen and Lovecraft. Just like the towns folk in the 'Whisperer in the Darkness", the island dwellers of Éilís Mór believe in the existence of ill willed non-human entities. This creatures will abduct or kill you if you wander to far into their domain, especially if all by yourself. In Lovecraft's story this beings resided in some of the remoter hills, while in the Reunion this creatures live in swamps.
